Lit is a program to teach reading to adults, young children, and adolescents who are either illiterate or have poor literacy skills.
Did you know that millions of people cannot read and write properly -- even in industrialised countries like the USA and Europe? For example estimates of 12 -33 million in the USA, and 4 -7 million in Germany. The number of illiterate people in developing countries is huge, often the majority is illiterate.

Teaching the alphabet
Lit will be a web application, and a live CD. Illiterate adults usually cannot use a computer, so the live CD will have simple instructions in pictures on how to insert a CD and boot the computer. The CD will automatically load a browser with Lit and speak instructions. All they need to learn is how to switch on the computer, and to use the mouse. After that they can learn independently. A movie tutorial is planned on how to use the mouse, which also auto-starts from the CD. Anyone with graphics skills who can help create a mouse teaching tutorial, please contact me.
Hence, students without reading or computer skills can take the CD to any computer and run the software without dependency on others to install software and guide them. Independence is part of the plan to reduce learning inhibitions, which is a major factor with adults.

Alphabet Quiz
Illiteracy causes social and economic barriers which are bad for individuals. Illiteracy also limits democracy because knowledge and laws are in written form. Those who cannot read, cannot inform themselves of their rights and options.
Most illiterate people can only get low paying jobs. They have no access to higher education. All because they cannot read or write sufficiently. For illiterate people in industrialised countries the shame factor is very high because 96-99% of the population can read and write.

Falling Letters Quiz
The Lit Now project aims to change that by distributing free software to teach literacy world-wide. The software is to be available in many languages. Computers are becoming available everywhere, and Lit will run with low requirements.
